Break-Even ROAS: How to Calculate the ROAS You Need to Make a Profit (With Examples)

Short answer

Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which your ads pay for themselves and you make neither a profit nor a loss on those sales. The formula is simple: break-even ROAS = 1 divided by your gross margin (as a decimal). If your gross margin after product, shipping, payment and fulfilment costs is 40%, your break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.40 = 2.5. Any campaign below 2.5 is losing money on first purchases; above 2.5 it is profitable. A target ROAS then adds the profit you want. Husbar uses these numbers to decide when to scale, fix or stop campaigns for e-commerce brands in the UAE.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Break-even ROAS = 1 / gross margin.
  • ✓Use your real margin after product, shipping, payment fees and returns.
  • ✓Target ROAS = 1 / (gross margin minus target profit margin).
  • ✓Repeat purchases can justify a lower first-order ROAS, if you know your customer lifetime value.

Understanding the numbers

What ROAS actually measures

ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend. A ROAS of 3 means you earned AED 3 in revenue for every AED 1 spent on ads. It says nothing about profit on its own: a ROAS of 3 is excellent for a 60% margin product and a loss for a 25% margin product.

Getting your true margin

Your gross margin for this calculation should include everything that changes with each order: product cost, packaging, shipping and delivery, cash on delivery or card fees, marketplace or platform fees and an allowance for returns. Many UAE stores overestimate margin by forgetting delivery and COD failures.

Target ROAS for profit

If you want a 10% profit after ad costs, subtract it from your margin: with a 40% margin, target ROAS = 1 / (0.40 - 0.10) = 3.33. This is the number to set in Google Ads target ROAS bidding or to judge Meta campaigns against.

When a lower ROAS is fine

If customers buy again, the first order does not need to be profitable on its own. A skincare brand with frequent repeat purchases may accept a first-order ROAS near break-even, because the second and third orders bring the profit. This only works if you track repeat rate and customer lifetime value.

How to calculate and use your break-even ROAS

  1. List every variable cost per order: product, packaging, delivery, payment fees, platform fees.
  2. Add an allowance for returns and failed cash-on-delivery orders.
  3. Calculate gross margin: (average order value minus variable costs) divided by average order value.
  4. Break-even ROAS = 1 divided by gross margin.
  5. Decide your target profit margin and calculate target ROAS.
  6. Compare each campaign's ROAS with your break-even and target numbers weekly.
  7. Scale campaigns above target, fix those between break-even and target, pause those below.
  8. Recalculate when costs, prices or delivery fees change.

Original worksheet: break-even ROAS in five lines

  • Average order value (AOV): AED ____
  • Variable costs per order (product + delivery + fees + returns allowance): AED ____
  • Gross margin = (AOV - variable costs) / AOV = ____%
  • Break-even ROAS = 1 / gross margin = ____
  • Target ROAS = 1 / (gross margin - desired profit %) = ____
  • Campaign ROAS this week: ____ (above, at or below break-even?)
  • Decision: scale / fix creative or offer / pause.
  • Next review date: ____

A worked example

Here is an illustrative example with simple numbers. A Dubai fashion store has an average order value of AED 300. Product cost is AED 120, packaging AED 10, delivery AED 25, payment and platform fees AED 15, and it sets aside AED 10 per order for returns. Variable costs total AED 180, so gross margin is (300 - 180) / 300 = 40%. Break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.40 = 2.5. The owner wants a 10% profit after ads, so target ROAS is 1 / 0.30 = 3.33. A Meta campaign at ROAS 2.1 is losing money on first orders; a Google Shopping campaign at ROAS 3.8 is profitable and ready to scale. Without the calculation, both campaigns looked "fine".

Raising your margin lowers the ROAS you need

You can make ads profitable not only by improving ROAS but by improving margin. Higher average order value through bundles, better supplier pricing, lower delivery costs, fewer returns and shifting customers from cash on delivery to prepaid all raise margin, which lowers break-even ROAS. Husbar's China Line can also help brands improve product cost through better sourcing.

Questions to ask before you start

  • Do we know our true variable cost per order?
  • What is our real return and failed-delivery rate?
  • Which campaigns are below break-even today?
  • Do customers buy again, and how often?
  • Is our tracking recording revenue accurately?

Key terms

  • ROAS: return on ad spend, revenue divided by ad spend.
  • Gross margin: revenue minus variable costs, as a percentage of revenue.
  • Break-even ROAS: the ROAS at which ad spend equals gross profit.
  • Target ROAS: the ROAS needed to hit a chosen profit margin.
  • MER: marketing efficiency ratio, total revenue divided by total marketing spend.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using product cost alone as your margin.
  • Judging every campaign by the same ROAS target regardless of product margin.
  • Trusting platform-reported ROAS without checking your store data.
  • Scaling campaigns that are below break-even.
  • Ignoring repeat purchases when judging new-customer campaigns.

Why ads fail without psychology

Most ad accounts do not fail because of the platform. They fail because the message does not match what the buyer is feeling at that moment: the fear, the hope or the comparison going on in their head. When the hook, the offer and the landing page all speak to the same motive, the same budget buys more qualified leads and more sales.

What is a good ROAS for e-commerce in the UAE?+

There is no single good ROAS. It depends on your margin. A good ROAS is one above your break-even ROAS, and ideally at or above your target ROAS.

How do I calculate break-even ROAS?+

Divide 1 by your gross margin as a decimal. With a 40% margin, break-even ROAS is 2.5.

Is ROAS the same as profit?+

No. ROAS measures revenue against ad spend. Profit depends on your margin and all other costs.

Should I use target ROAS bidding in Google Ads?+

It can work well once a campaign has enough conversion data. Set the target based on your own target ROAS calculation, not a guess.

Does Husbar manage Google, Meta and TikTok ads in the UAE?+

Yes. Husbar plans, builds and manages paid campaigns across Google, Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and LinkedIn for UAE and Saudi businesses, with Arabic and English creative.
