Which City in China Makes What? A Buyer's Map of China's Manufacturing Clusters
Short answer
Chinese manufacturing is organised in clusters: towns and districts where hundreds of factories, component suppliers and skilled workers in one industry sit within a short drive of each other. Shenzhen leads in electronics, Foshan in furniture and appliances, Yiwu in small commodities, Guzhen (Zhongshan) in lighting, Shantou's Chenghai district in toys, Jinjiang in footwear, Keqiao (Shaoxing) in textiles, Guangzhou in cosmetics and packaging, and Yongkang in hardware and cookware. Sourcing inside the right cluster usually means more choice, faster samples and sharper prices.
Key takeaways
- ✓Start your factory search in the cluster for your product, not on a generic search.
- ✓Clusters cut sample time because materials and components are next door.
- ✓The same product can be made in two clusters at different quality levels and prices.
- ✓Visiting one cluster lets you audit several factories in a single trip.
Why clusters matter to a buyer
Think of a cluster like a food street in Dubai. If you want shawarma, you go where ten shawarma shops compete side by side, not to a mall food court that does everything. Prices are sharper, quality is easier to compare, and if one shop lets you down there are nine others on the same street. Chinese clusters work the same way. A toy factory in Chenghai can source plastic pellets, printed boxes, electronic sound modules and safety testing within a few kilometres, so it can turn around a sample in days rather than weeks.
For brands in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC, this changes how you shortlist. Instead of typing "manufacturer" into a marketplace and getting traders from every province, you search, visit and audit inside the cluster that actually makes your product.
The cluster map: what is made where
| Product category | Main clusters | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer electronics, gadgets, accessories | Shenzhen, Dongguan (Guangdong) | Huge component ecosystem; fast prototyping; many small OEMs |
| Furniture (home, office, hospitality) | Foshan (Lecong, Longjiang), Dongguan | Showroom cities; check finishes and packaging for long sea freight |
| Home appliances | Foshan (Shunde), Ningbo and Cixi (Zhejiang) | Small appliances need electrical safety and market certificates |
| Lighting and LED | Guzhen town, Zhongshan (Guangdong) | Known as China's "lighting capital"; quality ranges widely |
| Toys | Chenghai district, Shantou (Guangdong) | Safety testing (EN 71, ASTM F963, ISO 8124) is essential |
| Small commodities, gifts, accessories | Yiwu (Zhejiang) | Massive wholesale market; mostly traders, so verify who actually makes it |
| Footwear | Jinjiang and Putian (Fujian), Wenzhou (Zhejiang) | Sportswear supply chain is strongest in Fujian |
| Textiles and fabrics | Keqiao, Shaoxing (Zhejiang) | Home of China Textile City; good for fabric sourcing for garments and abayas |
| Cosmetics and skincare (OEM/ODM) | Guangzhou (Baiyun district) | Many licensed cosmetics makers; check GCC registration needs |
| Glass bottles and perfume packaging | Xuzhou (Jiangsu), Guangzhou | Glass moulds and decoration (spraying, frosting, hot stamping) |
| Kitchenware and stainless steel | Jieyang and Chaozhou (Guangdong), Yongkang (Zhejiang) | Food-contact material testing matters |
| Ceramics and tableware | Chaozhou (Guangdong), Dehua (Fujian), Jingdezhen (Jiangxi) | Chaozhou is strong in tableware and sanitary ware |
| Hardware and tools | Yongkang (Zhejiang) | Also cookware, doors and fitness equipment |
| Bags and luggage | Baigou (Hebei), Guangzhou (Shiling for leather) | Material grades vary; agree material specs in writing |
| Eyewear | Danyang (Jiangsu), Xiamen and Shenzhen | Danyang is the largest optical lens base in China |
| Socks and hosiery | Datang, Zhuji (Zhejiang) | Very low unit prices at volume; MOQs by colour |
These are the best-known centres, not the only places. Many categories are made across several provinces, and some excellent factories sit outside the famous clusters. Use the map as a starting point for your search, not a rule.
How to use the map when sourcing
- Name your product precisely. "Stainless steel insulated bottle, 500 ml, powder coated, custom logo" finds the right cluster. "Bottles" does not.
- Find the cluster, then the factory. Search marketplaces and trade directories filtered by the cluster city, and look for listings that state a factory address in that city.
- Check the business licence. A real manufacturer's licence scope includes production. Our guide on factory vs trading company shows how.
- Compare at least three factories in the same cluster. Same materials, same specification, same quantity, so quotes are comparable.
- Audit before you pay a deposit. One trip, or one remote video audit day, can cover three or four factories in a cluster.

Request a China Line consultationCluster vs trading market: Yiwu is a special case
Yiwu is the world's largest small-commodity wholesale market, and it is brilliant for discovering products and placing mixed small orders. But most booths in Yiwu are traders or showrooms, not the factory itself. That is fine if you know it and price it in. If you need customisation, consistent quality or your own moulds, trace the product back to the factory that makes it. See our Yiwu Fair 2026 guide for small brands.

Suppliers stay anonymous in our Suppliers Directory and every introduction goes through Husbar, so you get the factory's capability without the risk of dealing blind.
Which city in China is best for manufacturing?+
There is no single best city. Shenzhen leads in electronics, Foshan in furniture, Yiwu in small commodities, Guzhen in lighting and Shantou in toys. The best city is the cluster that specialises in your product.
Are factories in Yiwu manufacturers?+
Some are, but most Yiwu market booths are traders or showrooms selling products made elsewhere. Check the business licence and ask for a factory visit or video audit.
Is it cheaper to buy from a cluster?+
Usually yes. Competition, shared suppliers and skilled labour keep prices and sample times down. Quality still varies, so verify each factory.
Can Husbar find a factory in a specific cluster?+
Yes. Tell us the product, quantity and target market and we shortlist verified factories in the right cluster. You can [request a China Line consultation](/china-line#consultation).
