Margin vs Markup: How to Price Imported Products Profitably

Short answer

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. If a product lands at 50 and sells for 100, the markup is 100% but the gross margin is 50%. Importers should price from the full landed cost (product, shipping, duty, VAT treatment and fees), then check that the margin still covers advertising, platform fees, returns and discounts. Mixing up margin and markup is one of the most common reasons new brands sell a lot and still lose money.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Markup = profit / cost. Margin = profit / price.
  • ✓Always start from landed cost, not the factory price.
  • ✓Leave room for ads, fees, returns and sales.
  • ✓Test price points; do not guess.

The formulas

MeasureFormulaExample (cost 50, price 100)
ProfitPrice - Cost50
Markup %Profit / Cost x 100100%
Gross margin %Profit / Price x 10050%
Price from target marginCost / (1 - margin)50 / (1 - 0.5) = 100
Price from target markupCost x (1 + markup)50 x 2 = 100

These examples are illustrations, not benchmarks. Your right margin depends on your category, channel and costs.

Step 1: calculate landed cost

Landed cost is everything it takes to get one unit into your warehouse: factory price, packaging, inspection, freight, insurance, customs duty, clearance and local delivery. Use our landed cost guide and import duty and VAT from China to the UAE for the details.

Step 2: add the costs of selling

  • Advertising cost per order. See customer acquisition cost.
  • Marketplace or payment fees, including buy now pay later fees.
  • Delivery and cash on delivery costs.
  • Returns and damaged goods.
  • Discounts during sale periods.

Step 3: check the contribution per order

Contribution is what is left from each order after landed cost and selling costs. If contribution is thin or negative, raise the price, improve the offer, lower costs or change channels. Many brands discover their best-selling product makes the least money once ad costs are included.

Step 4: set and test the price

Price is also psychology. Anchoring, charm prices and bundles change how a price feels; see psychological pricing strategies and how to test psychological pricing. If you need to increase prices later, read how to raise prices without losing customers.

Common mistakes

  • Using markup when you meant margin, then under-pricing.
  • Pricing from the factory price, ignoring freight and duty.
  • Ignoring ad costs in the margin calculation.
  • Planning deep sale discounts that turn orders unprofitable.
  • Not re-checking prices when freight or exchange rates change.

What is the difference between margin and markup?+

Markup is profit divided by cost; margin is profit divided by selling price. The same product has a higher markup percentage than margin percentage.

Is a 50% markup the same as a 50% margin?+

No. A 50% markup on a cost of 100 gives a price of 150 and a margin of about 33%. A 50% margin needs a price of 200.

What margin should an e-commerce brand target?+

It depends on category, channel and ad costs. Calculate your full cost per order and set a margin that leaves real profit after advertising.

Should I include VAT in margin calculations?+

Work with prices excluding VAT for margin if you are VAT-registered and can reclaim input VAT, but check with your accountant.

How often should I review prices?+

Review whenever costs change significantly, such as freight, duty, exchange rates or ad costs, and at least a few times a year.
